« Embedded within Shipman's narrative [The Silent Screen & My Talking Heart] [...] are the movies that created her even as she was scripting and acting in them; she became 'the Girl from God's Country' due to casting and marketing pressures and an internalized identification with her screen image. Notes sur Nell Shipman

• Actrice, productrice, scénariste et réalisatrice du cinéma muet.
• La première réalisatrice canadienne.
• Née à Victoria, Colombie-Britannique; décédée à Los Angeles.
• A déménagé à Seattle, Washington avec sa famille quand elle était adolescente.
• Est devenue actrice à l'âge de 13 ans.
• S'est mariée au producteur canadien Ernest Shipman à l'âge de 18 ans.
• Son plus grand succès a été le film Back to God's Country (1919), réalisé par David M. Hartford et tourné en Alberta; elle a joué le rôle principal et a écrit le scénario (tiré d'une nouvelle de James Oliver Curwood).
• Après son divorce d'Ernest Shipman, elle a fondé la compagnie de production Nell Shipman Productions et a produit des films en Californie, en l'État de Washington et en Idaho.
