"À la recherche d'une vie meilleure, Joanna Bell laisse son fils, David, dans la campagne jamaïcaine et devient bonne d'enfant à Toronto. Exploitée par ses employeurs et harcelée sexuellement par son professeur de cours du soir, Joanna perd rapidement ses illusions sur ce 'pays cocagne'. Lorsque David vient lui rendre visite, elle ne peut plus supporter l'idée d'en être à nouveau séparée et elle essaie d'obtenir de faux papiers d'immigration.
