"À la recherche d'une vie meilleure, Joanna Bell laisse son fils, David, dans la campagne jamaïcaine et devient bonne d'enfant à Toronto. Exploitée par ses employeurs et harcelée sexuellement par son professeur de cours du soir, Joanna perd rapidement ses illusions sur ce 'pays cocagne'.
