Callshop Istanbul

Directed by Hind Benchekroun and Sami Mermer
Canada, 2016 (documentary, 89 minutes, colour, Arabic)

Film Description:
"Sitting at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul has long been a favoured way station for merchants and travellers. In recent years, geopolitical upheavals have also turned it into a gateway to Europe for countless migrants from Africa and the Middle East, particularly Syria, Iraq and the countries involved in the Arab Spring. Throughout the city, these men and women in transit make their way to the many callshops, where they use the phone to sustain their ties to their home countries. The sensitive and humane Callshop Istanbul [...] captures a few of their conversations in superb tableaux, resulting in a poignant and dignified portrait of 21st-century migrants."
