When East Meets East

Directed by Kalli Paakspuu
Canada, 1996 (documentary, 53 minutes, colour / black and white, English)

Film Description:
"Many overseas-born Chinese today have lost touch with their roots and cannot decide whether they are still Chinese or whether they now belong to the culture they were brought up in. Here, an independent Canadian filmmaker and a student activist from China's democracy movement, expand our notions of the 'Chinese' by surveying international filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival. Using these interviews, as well as additional dramatic and musical material, [Kalli] Paakspuu questions the taken-for-granted understandings of identity within ethnic communities."
