Description du film :
« En 1917, deux navires entrent en collision dans le port de Halifax, provoquant l'explosion accidentelle la plus importante de l'histoire. Parmi les comptes rendus tragiques de la catastrophe figure l'étonnante histoire d'un marin qui se trouvait alors sur les quais. Soulevé par le souffle de l'explosion, il retombe à deux kilomètres de son navire, complètement dénudé, mais sain et sauf. Le matelot volant est une réflexion sur sa trajectoire. S'appuyant sur des témoignages de chocs traumatiques et d'expériences de mort imminente, les animatrices Wendy Tilby et Amanda Forbis se penchent sur ces moments cataclysmiques qui nous arrachent à notre parcours, nous mettent à nu et bouleversent notre perspective. En suspendant le marin dans un état de mort imminente, le film observe ces choses de la vie qui sont à la fois fugitives, profondes et tout à fait insignifiantes. [...] Faisant appel à un ensemble de techniques (3D, 2D, images en direct, photographies), les réalisatrices osent le mélange des genres, unissant la comédie, le suspense, la philosophie et l'approche expérimentale pour créer cette émouvante méditation née d'un bref intervalle, et célébrer le miracle et la fragilité de l'existence. »

« [Wendy Tilby and I] happened to be in Halifax more than 20 years ago and went to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, where there was a display about the explosion and this tiny paragraph about a sailor who was sent two kilometres in the air by the explosion, landing without his clothes. We were both struck by that, and wondered what the trip would look like. For one reason or another, we had to put it aside for a long time, but it stuck there. »

« Production on [The Flying Sailor] overlapped with the pandemic, which was obviously a terrible thing for everyone but beneficial for animation projects, because being cloistered indoors is conducive to getting work done. Animation is a very labour-intensive thing, and because we work experimentally, we need the time for trial and error. »
