The Forties

Directed by Sara Diamond
Canada, 1990 (video art, 48 minutes, colour, English)
Also known as "The Lull Before The Storm: The Forties (Part 1)"

Film Description:
"The Forties is the first of two dramatic portions in The Lull Before The Storm series. The Forties explores the histories of working class women and men in the post-war transition. It centres on changing definitions of femininity and the impact of these on family working life. Drawing on popular, theoretical and media representations of women's nature, The Lull Before the Storm series juggles these around a central, yet discontinuous narrative. This is ostensibly the story of Dorothy Sanderson, her son Bobby, and her husband George. Dorothy moves between waitressing, the aircraft assembly line, homemaking and childrearing. George traverses the logging industry, World War II, and construction, while Bobby gets older. The Lull Before the Storm series includes a dramatic portion (part 1 and 2) and a documentary portion (part 3 and 4)."
