« Adrienne Clarkson weaves together threads of feminism, art, and female sexuality in Artemisia, a historical reclamation of a woman's triumph in a patriarchal world. The daughter of a prominent 17th-century Italian artist, Artemisia Gentileschi showed early signs of talent. Her rape as a young girl by Agastino Tassi, the man she was subsequently married to, became the basis of her subversive and inventive paintings. [...] Evocative dramatic re-enactments mix with incisive analysis from feminist historians Germaine Greer and Mary Gerrard, to recall the notorious rape trial of the exceptional Italian painter. »
