Buck

Directed by Vern Hume and Leila Sujir
Canada, 1986 (video art, 25 minutes, colour, English)

Film Description:
"Buck is both a portrait and an examination of the 'constructed self'. The tape follows the personal history of retired ranch hand William Drummond, who worked throughout southern B.C. and southern Alberta between 1930 and 1970. Through a series of casually narrated stories, William (Buck) guides the viewer through his personal history. In this sense, the tape functions as an auto-biographical document, but at the same time reveals how William constructs his personal history to re-invent himself (the constructed self) as Buck the cowboy. The tape's visual images utilize cinemagraphic conventions borrowed from the Western to examine the construction of the mythic image of the cowboy and the relationship of the image to the western landscape."
